The 1-hour flight to Cusco is beautiful, as the plane seems to be touching the mountains and you have a wonderful view in the deep valleys. Arriving in Cusco, on 3.400m, we experienced the height: low oxygen, causing our heart to pump extra and feeling out of breath. During our (overpaid) taxi trip to our hotel we got our first view on low budget Peruvian house building and we were shocked. Houses are unfinished and ugly, and many houses are build with blocks of adobe, which turn dark grey when moist. The center of Cusco is old and nice, with fundaments still from Inca era and the rest colonial. It was cold and we bought some shawls made of Alpaca wool. Very comfortable. The city has been described positively and vividly in travel books, but could not impress us much. The view at night is nice, as the houses on the slopes lighten up like a Christmas tree.
We had a nice lunch in organic restaurant Greens, and a fusion dinner in Baco.
At the square are several tour agencies and in one of them we further organized our trip. We learned that our electronic ticket for Machu Picchu was not sufficient and they printed the right tickets for us. They also organized a taxi driver for next day to bring us to Ollantaytambo, at the end of the Valle Sagrado.Labels: Peru 2013
