Ricardo was our taxi driver and guide. He brought us to the old village of Maras and to Moray. Moray is the place were Incas build 3 stadium like sites, not for playing but to do agricultural experiments with plants. There are various things you can do in Valle Sagrado, but we choose these.
We also visited Maras, with the nearby salt winning. A unique place were a small water source is providing salt water. Salter than seawater and warm. The water is irrigated to many pools. After some months the salt can be harvested by the villagers of Maras. On top of the surface grows flor de sal, which we bought at the nearby shops.
We had lunch at Urubamba, the city were all tourist tours have lunch. Soon after we arrived at Ollantaytambo, where we have to take the train to Machu Picchu. After we sais bye to our driver, we walked around in Olly which is a nice village with famous Inca ruins.
We had a very interesting day with Ricardo, and I noticed that to really get to know this country you have to travel by car. Many people will say that it is too dangerous. Driving in Lima is chaotic, but driving in the country is no problem as long as you stay alert.
The train from Olly to Aguas Calientes takes less than 2 hours and follows the Willkanuta or Urubamba river. Final destination of the trains is Aguas Calientes and most start in Cusco.
